I thought about zaps after I posted, but the key term is experience. Zaps repurposed an existing experience which has led to all sorts of adoption problems. Not because they are inherently bad - the concept is good, but the experience is problematic on several levels.
Ecash is walking a line of legality that has too many unknowns.
I’m not sure what blossom is - but would be curious to know more.
My understanding of DVMs is that they are custom feeds similar to what Bluesky has. This is playing on the edges of experience innovation, but it’s not enough. Exhibit A is all the chatter on Bluesky about echo chambers and needing to remember to go look at the feed w/ flowers.
It is 1000% amazing that people are experimenting. And it should absolutely continue. There’s so much untapped potential to build new and better experiences from the protocol.

At a 10,000 ft level ActivityPub and Farcaster innovated with their protocols and experiences. Nostr and ATProtocol only innovated at the protocol level. Both face challenges as a result.

We selected outlets and wrote a script to include their notes. The feed includes participants from the Journalism Accelerator as well as other outlets with consistent note publishing cadence.

The news relay is/was an early experiment in segmenting content. Many news outlets are running rss feeds which can clog feeds. The news relay allows you to get your news while still seeing the other things in your feed.

I regularly share articles from elsewhere but they receive little traction here. It’s possible people read them and forget to repost them or they zap them and forget to repost them. Or people just want memes on Nostr.

I’m excited to see a conversation starting about the limitations of social media when it comes to social change. For far too long we’ve been duped by dopamine like hits into thinking posts have the power to incite change.
Awareness is not enough.

The response from insurance companies was more security for CEO’s and from elected officials mostly scolding. How dare people not grieve the loss of the powerful. Note the Chief Justice John Roberts reiterated his concern about the threats to the Supreme Court in his 2025 look ahead instead of acknowledging that credibility has been severely degraded under his leadership.

Memes are only the beginning.
The second article is both a critique of how social media has been weaponized by the left for performative politics as well as a guide for how to take small steps forward. The former is a much needed wake up call. The righteous callout culture also sometimes emerges here on Nostr. Mostly between people who are building so it is less toxic, but it may still be unnecessary and distracting.

Nos.social gives everyone a NIP05 during onboarding for free. It’s seamless.
To answer the question of why NIP05 I also had the same question bc you can change your NIP05 at any point and the rest of the network can still find you. What it does give you is an alternative to the npub to share with people so they connect with your account and not the 40+ other Jack’s on Nostr as there should only be a single instance of a NIP05 at a given time.
Also if you come to Nos and get a NIP05 it works everywhere on the network. The NIP05’s are not client specific

DMCA requests being used against journalists appear to be a harbinger of what’s to come in 2025 in the US media landscape.
This feels like a problem space the other decentralized platforms may struggle with given their infrastructure. It’s also an opportunity for #nostr to step up.

The web app makes it easy to share Nostr content with non-Nostr users. They can open the links in a website and ideally be encouraged to create an account. I’d be curious to hear from those developers what they don’t like about the existing solutions or if they are simply interested in Nostr and the easy thing to build is a webapp?

@npub1uux…ahzv is news and original content not an algorithm. I find myself learning new things from their work.
@npub1xm0…gs6s is very progressive/ left news / opinion pieces.
@npub1daa…8w5z writes about parenting as a dad, so if you have kids…
@npub1f5k…vk2u is another artist focused on street sketches. I love her work!
@npub1q33…mqu0 streams music from his own mastodon server but through Nostr. If you are in Europe it’s definitely worth a listen in the morning. He occasionally posts about technology but only related to his own setup.
@npub1jcw…jyrz is an advocacy organization for digital privacy in the states. Worth following if you want to help fight KOSA and other uninformed legislation.
This is a challenge we spent some time working on earlier this year and recruited the above folks to feature or join Nostr.
If you are familiar with the flywheel effect, Nostr is a bit stuck on the turn around the bottom. The tech is there, there’s a group of enthusiastic early adopters but they are struggling to bring more folks in. Lack of diverse content is a major barrier however there are other challenges as well.
Someone joined a few weeks ago, introduced themselves and was bombarded by welcome messages to set up a wallet. The person left within an hour after noting they were not interested in Bitcoin. There is nothing wrong with enthusiasm however we need to meet people where they are. Not everyone is excited about Bitcoin and we should respect that and instead discover what they are interested in.
Censorship resistance is a lagging motivator meaning a person will only make the switch when they have personally experienced shadow banning or outright banning elsewhere. Yet most of the Nostr marketing in the wild leads with this selling point. Ask 5 average people what they think that means and what the social network behind it would be like and you’ll begin to see why the flywheel is stuck.
With that said the protocol is incredibly flexible which means there are lots of opportunities to build around and/or through these challenges. And there are many developers and teams doing good work.
My sense is that 2025 would be a good year to start linking all the pieces together. Less traditional keynote talks and more interactive working sessions focused on specific use cases.
I’m personally excited about the possibilities as we head into 2025!

While the world may seem like it is on fire, people often don’t / won’t act until they feel like there are no other options. Revolutions work best when people have nothing left to lose.
Big tech’s hard lean into AI for surveillance and job replacement means many more people have reached a point where something new is possible.
I’m personally excited about the opportunities 2025 brings to decentralize technology ownership and by extension communication technology and media etc.
There is so much potential to make a much better future.

Relays provide the decentralization in Nostr. Instead of posting to a single server that is controlled ultimately by a single CEO, Nostr allows you to post to multiple relays (servers). So if one goes down or decides to remove your post, there are still other places for people to obtain your content.
The apps eg Primal, Amethyst etc communicate with all the relays to find the content of the people you follow in order to show it to you.

This field has tripped up a number of folks bc it is distinct on Primal and not on other apps, so if a user enters their website on Primal thinking it will populate across the network, they will find that it doesn’t.
Most protocols have standards, it would be helpful to get a baseline established for things like profile and kind 1 notes as well as links.

Bluesky is an app that runs in on the AT protocol. Nostr is a protocol. People can’t go to an App Store and download Nostr.
The apps need to market themselves. Marketing the protocol simply gets you more developers.
There are other factors related to branding that are not helping Nostr, but starting with the apps instead of the protocol goes a long way.

In the past month or so I’ve heard multiple stories from people who have almost been scammed or have been scammed via phone, email, text etc. The grifters are having a moment and it’s one we should be aware of when it comes to branding and marketing of Nostr.
A key element of brand positioning and marketing is to understand the context in which a product is entering the market. For Nostr three contexts we need to keep in mind are:
1. Most people are frustrated with platform social media’s dopamine engagement approach and endless ads, which boils down to a lack of control.
2. We live in the golden age of grift. All of us know at least one person who has fallen for or almost fallen for a digital scam of some sort.
3. The scammers did not stick to phone, text, email and social. They took full advantage during the web3 heyday. It doesn’t matter that reading a text message is nearly as risky today as holding a crypto wallet. The average person does not care enough to learn the difference between Bitcoin and other crypto. Unlike Farcaster Nostr does not require crypto/Bitcoin to participate. This is a feature.
In addition we need to remember that the crypto scams are just piece of the overall grift / scam culture pervading digital spaces. Phone and email scams are more sophisticated and text scams are emerging as well as social media scams. When I reached out to a contact in the game streamer space earlier this year about the Creator Residency, she expressed skepticism because of the web3/blockchain association, noting “Web3/block chain are considered risks and/or ethically the Boogeyman in a lot of creator circles”.
It’s too much for individuals to navigate all the spaces scams can come through on their own. In the US at least the phone companies are not using the tech they have to prevent the scams from getting through. Gmail is decent but not perfect. Meta just 🤷‍♂️.
I spent the summer onboarding a lot of new people to Nostr. I talked about the user-led approach to social media the protocol provides: build your own feed, own your social graph, choose your own content moderation, post the formats of content you want to post. At the end I asked if they would be interested in experimenting with micropayments via the pennies of Bitcoin. Some were interested. Others initially were not and then came back to me later asking for help to set up a wallet.
Nostr is amazing on its own. It solves many of the problems people have with platform social media.
By taking a Nostr-first approach to marketing, onboarding, and branding we’re much more likely to broaden the set of people interested in the protocol and its corresponding apps and services. In turn growth will accelerate.
And some of those folks will eventually want to learn more about zaps, satoshis and Bitcoin once they understand Nostr isn’t over run with scammers and grifters.
For those trying to onboard others, I’m curious if you are seeing the pushback because of fears around crypto or if you avoid that topic altogether?

One of the things that is depressing about Generative AI and imagery is that the outputs all start to look the same - high gloss illustration/ animation-y.
Today the only popular magazine cover that features art in the states is The New Yorker. Previously Life, Time and others often featured original art.
This link features a set of prints from agricultural magazine covers of the previous century. The amazing thing is the wide diversity of art and styles and even mediums.

Excited to share an interview we did with a couple of the Nos Creator Residents who stream on Nostr.
Having worked on streaming software elsewhere I learned that technology has enabled streamers to single handedly do the work of 10. What used to require videographers, audio engineers, lighting specialists etc is now undertaken by the streamer. It’s quite incredible when you think about it. It’s also the reason Nostr has the potential to change the game for these creators.
Both @npub1rr3…nywd and @npub1q33…mqu0 are at different stages of their streaming journey but both were excited about the experience streaming on Nostr offers.
