Jeff Cliff 🦝 (npub1umx…d244) That's a good question, how bad was the British empire really? The Declaration accuses them of a lot of bad things, but there is a British rebuttal to the Declaration that says most of those claims are wildly exaggerated, and the rest are made up outright.
The British were hard up for cash to fight France, and were squeezing their colonies. The American elite wanted their own country and didn't see why they should be ruled from Britain.
