The main problem facing Nostr adoption I’ve seen after talking to a variety of bitcoiners in person is overcoming the inertia that you described of letting go of an existing follower base. I didn’t find it difficult personally, but I’m probably not the average user. The appeal of anonymity by using throwaway npubs for secure DMs is a killer app and has a completely different use case from public-facing social posts. One can still remain on X indefinitely knowing their content is stored on a centralized system and still choose Nostr for privacy over the alternatives.
