Do you know what you were given for sedation? We typically use oral sedation (similar to Valium) and topical numbing drops. Surgery is too quick to warrant much else, much less take the risk of general anesthesia. The eye (for cataract removal) doesn’t need much sedation. We’ve done it with zero sedation other than numbing drops (that wear off in a few min) when a patient has eaten prior to surgery (ie. they didn’t do the no eating 8 hours npo). How long did your cataract surgery take? Our surgeons vary, but cataract removal at our practice takes between 3-7 min, occasionally 10 min. You do have to remain still, but your head should be taped and your eye will be held open with a lid speculum so you can’t blink. Was your procedure done differently?
