I spent about six months in Webelos (cub scout to Boy Scout bridge year), and left because I didn't have direct parental involvement and because the Scoutmaster made me uncomfortable. I was hoping to make new friends and go on fantastic adventures, but I left somewhat confused and unhappy. Looking back on it, I think the environment wasn't great, and my parents lack of interest and support didn't help.
My son joined Cub Scouts, did Webelos, and is in BSA. Objectively (measured by metrics), he was and is a star, having done more fundraising, merit badges, and campouts than others in any of the units he has been in. Some things have helped him succeed:
My son is motivated. I wasn’t at his age.
He has my wife-and-I’s full support.
BSA has cleaned up their act both in terms of rooting out pedophiles and financially stabilizing their situation in recent years.
My son just attained his Life rank, and is in the process of spec’ing his Eagle Project. And I will be proud when he finishes his work and attains his Eagle.
(and I will be a little bit jealous)
