I've come up with a design for a handheld multi-purpose radio that would also be programmable and, if you've been issued a call sign, can transmit on licensed frequencies like GMRS and amateur radio (you'd only be able to get the transmitting program if you prove your license).
Among other things, it would have a phone like keypad, a power-indicating LED (green = receiving, yellow = medium power use, red = high power use, like when transmitting at over 0.5 watts), and an e-ink display.
