Counting calories works -- but I haven't gone down in weight by that amount either.
I've lost 50 lbs since last spring, and have plateaued at about 10 lbs overweight since then (which I'm ok with).
A calorie counting app is helpful. Getting a cheap kitchen scale to weigh portion sizes is also helpful until you get a visual sense of how much is enough for a single serving.
Exercise is helpful, but really dropping pounds probably means some hunger pains for a few months.
