Whitney's version is iconic. How are you going to top that?! It's like Stevie Wonder singing "Superstition" or Ray singing "Georgia" any cover after these versions, pales in comparison. Whereas pop hits leave some room (at the singers risk) to take liberties, I think the anthem has very little room for experimentation.
IMO sing the song well, on key and get outta the way, it was never about the singer, we got breads and circus to follow and that's what the people came for.
