Well, in this case I'm talking about Mastodon specifically, in relation to Bluesky specifically, not the merits of the Fediverse as a whole, or issues about federating with proprietary apps like Bluesky or even Threads. At least there is Bridgy Fed to connect Bluesky, which is very important. I do believe in the end all social web apps will be able to federate, open source or proprietary.
