Shift movements are the (not very) secret weapon of serious architectural photography. It's the main reason that view cameras and technical cameras that support these movements are still used in commercial photography. Vertical shift allows capturing tall buildings without the distortion and converging vertical lines introduced by tilting the camera upward. Shifts also facilitate making expansive, distortion free stitched images like this one.
