Back in the day, terminals would claim to be vt100’s even if they weren’t and it caused all sorts of problems. Nowadays the same is true for xterm-256color, even though nobody supports xterm’s more powerful features (region move, Tektronix emulation, etc).
But it’s gotten to the point that both Mac and Windows terminals report xterm-256color, making $TERM useless as a terminal identifier.
(Sorry, I’m particularly passionate about terminal emulation.)
