I have hundreds of drafts in various levels of completion... Sometimes I'll dig through them. Usually I stop working on them for the same reasons you've described. With enough time though, I can objectively go back and either say "yes" and continue working on it because it's still a good piece, or "no" and be honest with myself that it was a waste of time and move on to something else. No one said you had to complete it, but you should explore it.
