Flashout 3D is actually a much older game than Redout. I remember playing this on my Ouya back in 2013. It also got a few mobile releases though I can’t find it any more on the iPhone App Store. However, last year, it got a big upgrade on PC as Flashout 3D: Enhanced Edition – now looking very good in 4K resolution, though it’s kept its old look.

Like Redout, Flashout is an antigravity futuristic racer. However, unlike Redout, it sometimes feels like a kart racer. You collect power-ups, shoot competitors, try to discover secret perks.

I quite like this one, though I also acknowledge it’s not for everyone. Some people don’t like the low polygon aesthetic and don’t like the music. But trust me, when this game came out on mobile, it looked incredible. I like it on PC – but then again, I’ve never hated mobile games that get ported to PC.

But what makes this game worth recommending is one word: free.

That’s right, it’s completely free on Steam. No “gotchas” like loot boxes or microtransactions. Everything about it is free – and it’s hard to argue against free.

However, this requires relatively high specs: 3.2Ghz dual core CPU, 8GB RAM, 2GB VRAM, 1GB space. Flashout is made for Windows, but you can play it fine on Linux via Proton.

This may not be for everyone but I had a blast.
