not even make life *good* for all citizens, even just...smooth out some of the rougher edges of living, ya know? america is a rich country, so why do we have hunger, homelessness, so many crappy schools, etc.
but yea, to my family, it might seem obvious that representative government should be doing the will of the people (sort of a classic american government myth), and things like reducing hunger, reducing homelessness, etc., are usually very popular among the populace, and yet, the government does nothing because [complicated reasons].
i don't know if she'd thought of it like that before. unfortunately there isn't much to say to someone who doesn't think government should be used to help make things *generally better* for its citizens. you can't make someone care (unfortunately).
