Ok if you perceive Pubky as a social media and only comparable to Nostr as a social media and so the general Web use cases are outside of the comparison then you are misunderstanding pubky, and that is mostly the marketing fault, and that is why I hate this social media framing.
But even then, I think pretending that Nostr doesn't need URLs and you are always looking things up within a context is false. If you see an old note and the recommendations in it are no longer valid, then you really don't know where to go to find the thread that note was in reply to.
Pretending that iin Nostr everything and everyone is online often enough to gather enough context about where something is. is a false claim that not even Mike Dilger makes.. because it is false.
As for why do nodes store small data temporarily... the answer is because the DHT in their Bittorrent client decided to support that BEP, and it is not causing them any trouble to care, that is basically the definition of p2p networks, a software you don't mind to run.
Funny that we are discussing free riding when Nostr relays are much much much much more expensive to run, and come with serious legal liabilities, but we are all just happy to use them and not ask how are these people supposed to survive let alone be plenty enough to be censorship resistant.
