I intend to distribute official binaries with an embedded secret key that would be necessary to talk to official game servers. This way anybody can fork the game and make their own network, but without the secret they wouldn't be so easily able to disrupt the official game services.
This plus probably clients hashing their own code and data to verify with the server that the clients hasn't been tampered with. Last recourse would be to modify engine to obscure the security logic.
