I suppose this is where some games introduce a set of gateway servers that handle user account registration, auth and issuing session tokens and the rest is done with a different server that only accepts connections from authenticated clients. This way any malicious traffic would stop at the gate(s) and wouldn't disrupt services like game server discovery.
