I disagree with your assessment of needs. Your vision makes it *that much harder* to block corporate surveillance at the router. The Browser/CA (effectively just Google at this point) forum pushes their own root of trust to make sure that there is an uninterruptible tunnel between their ad-funneling engagement factory and the consumer device.

MITM is the only reliable way to keep that crap off my kids' computers, especially now that Google has invaded schools. I can't just block Google properties at the IP level, I have to do packet inspection to figure out which connections carry legitimate educational material and which connections are for surveillance and advertising.

Every year this gets harder as they ratchet down security in the name of safety. Every year I have to explain to a larger percentage of the IT industry that it's not *our* safety they're protecting, and it won't be until there is an independent noncommercial entity in charge of the x.509 trust chain.
