I - personally - am someone who could be slotted in to a relatively strong research position in a number of government agencies.

The pay isn't usually bad either: the way this happens in practice is that researchers are hired by a contractor, and the contractor pays a better salary than any sort of general schedule pay...but the contractor is still subject to the whims of the government. This allows the government to get around General Schedule pay being shitty compared to industry.

Why bring this up now? I have these connections, and I've been approached. There's people still around who remember what happened about a decade ago, and they see the writing on the wall. They wanted to avoid the whole thing altogether...but Elon is forcing them to trim. They expect to have to build back a workforce in a year, and they're telling me "hi."

I of course gave a diplomatic response: "I'm looking around for positions in industry and seeing if I like their projects more." They're going to keep knocking, I don't think that was convincing :reimu_sigh:.
