I take a slightly more nuanced approach to my thinking around this. A part is either original hardware, or it's not. But not all parts are equal. Some modern replacements can be (pretty much) proven equivalent to the original hardware. The C64 PLA replacements are a good example here. For others we have exceptionally good compatibility tests that can "prove" that a modern replacement is functionally equivalent.
