Even if the hardware were significantly faster today, the compiler side is just not there. I know people who are funded to work on this stuff for all sorts of runtimes, so it's happening, but that's also not going to be an overnight thing.
Maybe we'll be there for the most widely used runtimes in a few years, but if Keller's statement is intended to be taken seriously and not as shilling for his startup, we don't have a few years; it has to be right now.
