Jimmy Carter and I were both raised in a Southern Baptist tradition that claimed — officially if not in reality or practice — to value doing the Word we heard proclaimed in church, doing the Word, not simply listening to it.

Because I was shaped by that tradition, I have always — probably very naively — believed that character matters. Supremely. That doing good matters. That the best thing that can be said of any of us when we leave this world is, "She did good."
