Like one bit thing to figure out well in advance of anything is "can I find an existing game engine that is commonly used for the style of worldbox I want and supports a language I actually like writing, or should I build something", bearing in mind that engine development is its own project even if I never open up the engine to be used for anything else or by anyone else.
