Not on the same league as murder, but I always find it interesting that society follows simple, arbitrary rules that keeps society running.

Take driving for example. As a rule everyone agrees to drive on the same side of the road in one direction. Sure its the law, but it is so ingrained into people that most don't think about it on a daily basis.

Same with murder. I am going to assume that most people do not go around actively thinking about murdering other people (post morning coffee). Is it because of the consequences, or as a social species, subconsciously feel that we may need others and killing them off is contrary to that end, or as a society our own self preservation depends on others not going around randomly murdering each other?

But to your point, it is a very fine line between killing someone and not killing them. I tend to think that its the consequences society places on murder that deters these actions.
