In a simple yes/no vote on a single issue if the protest isn't about that single issue it's irrelevant. Nobody who voted Leave in the referendum has been ignored because they got what they voted for, whether they really wanted it or not.

Protest votes sometimes are all we have but we need to consider what we're voting for as much as what we're voting against.
