Well to be fair it was rather more of a specific client issue (Gajim) and the fact it does not default to encryption out of the box for some reason. Since I'm used to Matrix, I was looking for encryption settings in the client itself when all I really had to do was clicking a padlock icon in the message input box to enable it, it's the drawback of GUI design.

Other than no default encryption for DMs, the client seems solid.
