Me and a friend of mine just shifted to xmpp today and the issue wasn't the quality of clients but rather their lacking documentation.
We spend over a hour to just get encryption working, because there were no good docs snd you have to end up asking an actual person who knows the quirks of the program to get stuff done.
There's no much friction to get it setup, I believe you are better off sending emails using pgp.
