I've been actively interested in this area for years.

I can tell you from experience that 'normies' (by any definition) can use git as well as your average software engineer.

I can guess (from general acquaintance) that designers who hate being told to work for free are speaking from a context of businesses making money, while telling them their doodling isn't valuable. Their vitriol isn't directed at FOSS.
