I do love when designers say something of this sentiment, but then when you ask “so why don't you donate your time, with zero compensation other than improving the software?” and then they get all affronted and go off about how much work designing is and they need compensation if they were to do it in their free time
I agree that many (but not all) projects don't have a good way for non-developer designers to contribute (and a handful are actively hostile to designers), but it is mysterious that of all the tradespeople relevant to modern software development, only developers are expected to donate their time (and resources for hosting, testing, etc.) but everyone else needs to get paid for anything to get done
