Bitcoin was never fungible but it could be if privacy was added, Hal knew that after one week of "running bicoin" that solution is sidechains not the blockstream one but the bip 300 we could lock utxos on many sidechains for different purposes. But again still a "store of value" not means of exchange on the first layer although it's better to move things on a privacy sidechain.
Meanwhile we have something fungible that can be used now as means of exchange.
