One year ago I recorded a podcast with Ungovernable Misfits (npub1jcy…2890) talking permaculture and bitcoin in general.

This clip is a good summary of my high level thoughts on Permaculture and Bitcoin and was basically the ideal I was working towards throughout the year.
https://fountain.fm/episode/12663740564
Had a great time talking homesteading, permaculture and the next phase of Bitcoin succession with Max on Bit Buy Bit podcast.

The podcast as a whole provides a good reference point for a lot of what has happened on the homestead over the last year. I'm not sure why I thought to detail so many of my plans for the year, maybe hold myself accountable. All in all, I was able to accomplish almost everything I mentioned throughout the podcast in the last year. Take a listen and check out this year in review mega note.

February was defined by maple syrup production, the threads aren't as cohesive as I was still learning Nostr and developing my style.

Finished up tapping the maple trees today, 60 taps total this season. I started with just handful in 2016 and have pretty much doubled each year since. Not sure if I have enough trees to double to 120 taps next year. Many still have a ways to grow before they're big enough.

March the highlight was working on the 20ft tiny house, still haven't quite figured out Nostr.

Testing out the railing for the stairs up to the loft in this 20ft tiny house I've been working on for the last several years. I typically have 3 months to work on it a few hours a day during the winter. I look forward to hosting many guests, students, apprentices, instructors and family in it here on the homestead once completed.

April was marked the completion of the Bitcoin mining dehydrator, one of highlights of the whole year for the homestead.
Homemade Bitcoin Mining Dehydrator

Currently processing elderberry with a S9 set to 980w. I designed the dimensions of the box to be similar popular 1000w consumer dehydrators since that's the wattage at which the S9 is most efficient.

The door of the dehydrator simply presses into the front and I can control the vent gap for more or less airflow which also helps to control the temperature.

Highest temperatures I've been able to measure are around 135°f, which I read is good for fruit. I can get temps as low as 90°f with higher fan speeds and larger vent opening.

I cut a hole in the back of the box so the exhaust fan of the S9 fits snug. That way I can easily remove it and use for a different heating application when I need to.

The energy efficiency of this contraption knocks the socks off any other consumer dehydrator available and it cost next to nothing to build. All I had to buy was the screen for the trays for around $10. I had everything else laying around already.

I can fit a gallon of elderberry or 2 gallons of grapes per load with the 10 trays. Each bach of elderberry takes about 24hr to complete and the raisins take at least a couple days. So far the elderberry and grapes are all I've had a chance to try. Next up is garlic to make garlic powder. #plebminer #bitcoin #bitcoinmining #permaculture #permies #grownostr #homesteading #doublespendenergy #dehydrator #heatreuse

May was the sweet spot of sunlight and waning colder temperatures which lead to lots of pleb mining at the homestead. The solar power was flowing and the dehydrator was constantly loaded. The cold frame was growing cannabis and the portable S9 space heater was saving lambs from hypothermia.

June the sheep were grazing the pasture at it's finest and the yurt was booked solid with guests
Katahdin hair sheep mowing lawn around yurt with rainbow in sight

I caught a slight of a rainbow while moving the sheep to mow the grass around our yurt. They will be in this paddock for the next few days while there are a few days without guests at the yurt. The timing of this move worked out so that I didn't have to spend time mowing and waste the grass that the sheep could be eating instead. Always feels good to put the animals to work and feed them at the same time.

July the bitcoin mining clothes dryer was completed in the peak of the summer tourist season. A project I have been thinking about and working towards for over 6 months.
Bitcoin Mining Clothes Dryer

Here at the homestead we host guests at our house as well as a 20ft yurt so one of the largest power usages is the electric clothes dryer. In the busy season, the dryer is usually running for several hours a day. It made a lot of sense to use a Bitcoin miner for the heat instead of the heating element in the dryer.

https://imgur.com/eGKbv0G

I tried to use what I already had as much as possible to connect the miner to the dryer, so for less than $100 I was able to make it work. Basically needed a 20a 220v breaker and 220v outlet plus some ductwork. I simply cut a hole in the heating duct in the back of the dryer and attached a 6in duct coupling to it. If I need to I can cap off the coupling and continue to use the dryer as normal. Basically if the Bitcoin miner breaks down I won't be stranded without a dryer.

To operate, I set the dryer to timed dry, set the heat to air dry, and turn on the miner. After using it for a dozen loads or so it definitely works well. Next I will be working on how to reduce the noise from the miner fans but to start I wanted to make sure it was capable of drying laundry first. Feels good to get sats back for one one of the largest power usages on the homestead!

August I made my second appearance on the Bitcoin Rapidfire podcast talking about mining on the homestead.
Had an excellent conversation with johnkvallis (npub1cqm…hjec) on Bitcoin Rapid Fire. We talk bitcoin meetups, permaculture, pleb mining, and more. I always love how Jon takes conversations to deeper more philosophical realms.

September the food forest ripening and cannabis colas were forming.
Food Forest Harvest: Grapes. After 5 years, thr first grape harvest has come

We planted several varieties of grape vines to climb nitrogen fixing black alder trees in the food forest. After 5 years the vines have completely climbed the trees. The grapes are doing their intended job of creating physical stress to encourage the tree to release nitrogen to the surrounding plants. Now, we are harvesting the first bunches of grapes. These grapes are Niagra. The ethic of return the surplus back to the system is starting to take on a whole new meaning as the plants we are growing are starting to mature and produce. Soon we will have more than we have time to harvest and process alone. Thankfully most plants have a job beyond the fruit they produce so if we miss a harvest a yeild is still being obtained. In this case, if I am unable to harvest the grapes and hops vining up the trees, they are still doing the work of stressing the tree providing a yeild of nitrogen fertilizer.

Cannabis harvest is about to commence!

These are the best expressions of the super lemon haze x pineapple pomegranate cross I've been working on. (any ideas for names welcome) This season all 9 remaining plants are back crossed with pollin from the original pineapple pomegranate genetics I started with from Massive Seed Co. out of Oregon.

I like to harvest slowly over the month of October to make sure I get some buds early if mold gets bad and get plenty of perfectly ripe bud too if conditions are favorable. Looking forward to some tasty finger hash!!

Last season was a bit of a let down with a small harvest and no viable seed but this year is looking to make up for it. Plus, I've got some new genetics in the mix with white widow and gold leaf thanks to connecting and trading seed at my local Bitcoin meetup.

October the sheep were finishing out the season strong making for some of our best lamb we've grown.
Katahdin hair sheep eating trees, grazing strong pasture, and making above average gains

The sheep have now completed the upper pasture at the homestead in 21 days. About a week longer than average, due to eating tree prunings and ideal weather. Just before the leaves change in autumn, I cut the limbs of the trees growing on the edges of the paddocks as the sheep grazed through the pasture. This provides a great supplement to their nutrition extending the time it takes to graze a paddock and adding to the diversity to thier diet.

This is the 5th and final time we plan to graze these pastures this season so I'm letting the sheep graze each paddock a little harder than usual. The paddock on the left is an example of what it looks like after grazing and on the right is where they moved on to.

Getting the extra day or two out of each paddock by the combination of the tree leaves and the extended grazing leads to more rest for the next paddock. Doing so seemed to compound the growth of the pasture this season
with ideal weather leading to a whole extra week of grazing on this pasture.

During the routine check up and weigh-in for the flock we found the sheep in excellent health with only a few needing wormer. The average weight of the lambs was 76lbs up 5lbs above the average at the same time last year of 71lbs. While the growth slowed down a bit from the last weigh-in the lambs are still on track to finish larger than last year.

The leaves on the trees had started to fall in the last paddock of the pasture but the grass ended up getting almost 50 days of rest. The paddock still supported the sheep for an additional day than usual with the strength of the grass alone. Now the sheep have moved on to the last pasture before taking lambs to butcher and separating the ewes into their breeding groups. Just a couple more weeks!

We have a couple lambs left for sale, feel free to DM if you're interested in adding a lamb to your freezer this winter. I am delivering to Grand Rapids, Chicago, and Milwaukee.

November we rounded out a great year with the horses after finally realizing our goal of using them for carriage tours.
Haflinger draft ponies giving wagon rides; working for their hay.

We got out haflinger horses for several reasons, one to enjoy them recreationally, two as a way to increase our resilience at the homestead, and three to generate cash flow. The past several years (covid nonsense mostly) have impeded our ability to use the horses to make money but this year we were able to realize our business with the horses.

The largest input we have at the homestead is hay, and thankfully we are able to source it locally, as close as directly across the street. The horses do a great job of converting hay into fertility we can easily utilize but it is still expensive. Now, the horses are paying for their hay with the work they do giving wagon rides and we still get use the manure they produce to feed our chickens, as well as fertilize gardens and pastures.

We gather the manure and feed it to our chickens. They scratch and turn it, making it into compost quickly. They find fly larvae in the manure, which provides protein for them to produce high quality eggs. By eating the larvae, the fly pressure is also reduced for the horses.

Once the chickens process the manure, we use it to grow out annual vegetables and cannabis. The year we had more compost than we could use in the gardens and we spread it on a weak pasture.

Over time the horses have transformed from an expensive hobby to an essential system on the homestead. The produce cash flow, they have the ability to work, and the generate a nutrient flow that produces bountiful growth.

December I spent spreading the word of the intersection of Bitcoin and Permaculture on the TokyoCitadel (npub1cl4…gf39), QW (npub1tvq…krq4), and FrogTalk (npub1svc…a9g9)
The Tokyo Citadel Podcast recording I did weeks ago is finally released and it's an absolute banger! The amount of ground we cover in this podcast is astonishing. Bitcoin and Permaculture together are the antidote for the most extractive system in the world, fiat money. By using systems modeled after nature we can build capital for future generations creating an ultimately resilient culture. I go deep on how I use Bitcoin and Permaculture to exit the system and hopefully offer inspiration for how you can do the same. If we can't end fiat today at least we can opt out.

TokyoCitadel (npub1cl4…gf39) podcast has quickly become one of the few podcasts I look forward to each release. Dash (npub1tqw…2jhh) is facilitates excellent discussions and the rest of the crew together get me thinking deeper about whatever subject they are discussing.
