The truth is that in the last few years these models have gotten ridiculously better both through training/architecture improvements and improvements to the tooling around the models.

I have an 8Gb blob of matrices on my computer that I can have a conversation with. A surprising number of times those conversations yield useful insight.

I don't think there is sentience or intelligence there. But as a tool for smartly exploring state spaces - it still feels very scifi.
