It was a DOS BBS program (Major BBS) that could handle multiple concurrent users on a single DOS PC, without running a "proper" multitasking OS. I know it used a DOS extender to access memory beyond the 640K. But I don't know if that also implemented threads, or if it was all event-driven like Twisted... which was also a hell of a stunt when I first saw it.
