Sacrifice released in 2000, shortly after Messiah, marks the end of the road for Shiny Entertainment’s “classic” era. Not long after this, they would be sold and merge with a few other companies before being swallowed into Inforgrames’ Atari. However, they would make 3 more games, two based on the Matrix series and a movie tie-in for the Golden Compass. These games still maintain that Shiny secret sauce of innovation, even though they are IP’s. But let’s talk about Sacrifice.

Sacrifice is one of those games when you play it, you wonder why more games like it have not been made. It’s a 3rd-person real-time strategy game. Instead of a top-down view of your armies and units, you take the role of a commander with a smaller unit and you must complete battlefield objectives. This had not been done like this before and would not be done like this again till Double Fine’s Brütal Legend. The game also came bundled with a level and scenario editor so you could build your own maps and game modes yourself.

The story is about god’s would be god’s hubris and betrayal. It would spoil too much to talk about it here, but be assured it has all of the trademark humor Shiny was known for. #sega #retrogames #Videogames #videogames #VideoGames #ShinyEntertainment
