Messiah Released in 2000 is probably one of the more interesting games Shiny ever made. In development for years, it was built around a new technology called tessellation. The idea was that the game would be infinitely graphically expandable based on your hardware. To achieve this, they actually would run the game while running an algorithm to determine how much deformity they needed to do to their 3D models under certain performance conditions. It’s a rather interesting piece of tech. Sadly, the game is quite a pain to run under modern hardware.
You play as Bob, one god’s angels, and you are sent to Earth to clean up a mess made by satan. The main gameplay gimmick is the ability to possess any person or creature. This lends itself to creative problem-solving. Some puzzles would take a lot of out-of-the-box thinking. The game is also incredibly violent, but I feel in the very cartoonish way. Bob seems to care very little about our actual survival here. If you can get it running, I recommend trying it out as it’s a unique game even by today’s standards. Shiny was always trying to do something different.
