If you install the app using a modern app repository client, settings won't be restricted and you can have unattended updates. It's unfortunate that F-Droid's solution is using a privileged extension to bypass as many of the rules as possible without upholding the rules that having INSTALL_PACKAGES makes them responsible for enforcing. We made a serious attempt at convincing F-Droid to fix these issues and much more serious issues, but they have not done it.
