I’ve worked at schools where you’ve needed to show a college ID at the entrance, but you could also make an appointment to come in if unaffiliated. Sometimes it’s a safety issue—in one case, the library had a history with unaffiliated individuals coming in and making students extremely uncomfortable with their behavior, so the policy started being enforced when it hadn’t been before.
