With the exception of medical studies I can't see a case where it would be better to have a small group of either working scientists or paid professionals to check anything, compared to just putting it out there, making the data available and surfacing comments from the scientific community (which is how I see post pub PR).

But absolutely agree with the idea that more experimentation is necessary. A key part of making that a reality is reducing the cost to experiment, incidentally. 😉
