The thing you're doing wrong is that you're trying to apply the butter while the pan is cold.
If you heat up the pan first you can just throw a slice of butter into the pan and it will melt, allowing you to coat the entire pan with the molten (liquid) butter by just letting it slide around while you tilt the pan.
No need to touch the butter with your hands.
