my mom’s side of the family is “pioneer stock” as we say. My grandparents are very good about cycling through their non-perishables. With no outside input they could probably feed all their descendants (about 30 mouths) for six months.

During the recession we still bought perishable food and were on food stamps, but severely depleted the basement supply until my grandpa’s work picked up about a year and a half later. We wouldn’t have starved but it made it nicer.
