I think my wife recently researched that there might be genetic prevalences to this. I knew I was queer long before I got my diagnosis. I stopped being ashamed for who I waa long ago and that might be what makes it so easy for us to socialize amongst our "tribe". We do not require anyone to pretend. Everybody can just be who they are.
