As a result of this conversation, I've been researching cellophane further, so thank you for the impetus to do so 😀

Apparently cellophane can't be recycled, although can be composted under certain conditions (conditions which are nowhere near as widely available as its manufacturers like to claim). There's also problems with its identification as cellulose film and polypropylene film are pretty much identical. This is probably why local councils in the UK don't like accepting the stuff in compostable collections. The composting facility wouldn't know if people had made an identification mistake until they were left with loads of plastic.

The takeaway for me though is that I am going to continue to actively try and avoid buying cellophane-wrapped products as far as possible, as I do with plastic-wrapped ones. There's too many environmental problems both with its initial manufacture and end-of-use disposal, especially in the volumes in which it is foisted upon us.
