A model that comes to mind is the French one, where scientists enter the system young and get what appears to me, as an outsider, permanent jobs, and then work their way through the system as they can or want. As long as costs of living are low compared to incomes, which are modest, the system seems to work, even if there are still steep access and power differences between the junior and the senior, with the latter having far too much power over the juniors.
