Lots of lab heads treat the more junior people in their lab as their employees to give orders to. But even if you try to be a benevolent dictator, everyone is still aware who has the power, no? Assuming you're not able to give lifetime jobs to people, they're going to be relying on you for many things, like job renewal, or championing them in terms of publications, introductions and references for future jobs, etc.
