In truth using the limit definition OUGHT to be more powerful than any of the "rules" since they are just short cuts for various typical cases.
The limit can do things that they can't and I can remember turning to it in times of need.
But, limits are much more mysterious to me than say... polynomials in terms of when they can and can't be "resolved"
