I am using pizero, eps and pico for iot devices at home. All of them are connecting to HomeAssistant over MQTT. You can do some automation in HA OR I have homeassistant app in phone so I can control manually. yes, you / customer need new box, network ... but I think that if you start IoT at home you already have those.
