It was designed to be the central hub for all home automation, allowing people to integrate all their other IoT devices with the HestiaPi. So you could have heat turn off if no motion was detected inside, blinds close if the temperature outside is drastically different than inside, or whatever crazy logic you want based on the gear you have.
Also, it was created over 5 years ago, when the ESPs were not as popular or well supported as they are today, and the rPi pico didn't exist.
However, we do have an effort to make an ESP32 based model (Called Hestia32) with very limited functionality. It'd just allow control via wifi and a screen to use it locally. No interaction with other #IoT gear, no ability to add complex logic with a few lines of javascript.
The goal is to allow people to have this cheap option if they don't need anything fancy, but if they do have the HestiaPi, they can work together and you can do the fancy stuff. Help wanted, in case you want to join in. 🤓
