I joined Mastodon during the big twitter exodus last November.
The "onboarding" interface would only show me 1 or 2 instances. And if I closed the connection and reconnected, it showed 1 or 2 different instances, or, none at all.
None of the ones shown gave any meaningful description of its "community", and in fact, most were black holes... click on them, and nothing.
One instance that showed signs of life, took me all the way thru signup until it wanted to send me an email address verification email.... and it never sent it. So I went through the whole process again and gave it a different known good functional email address. Nothing.
Finally found and got signed up on Universodon.com a couple days later. Couple days after that, the verification emails showed up from the first one I tried.
For me, community and content had nothing to do with where I ended up... I still don't know what or if there's supposed to be a commonality to "my instance's" membership.
