I was a Waterstones bookseller for most of my 20s and have types my fair share of ISBNs into a computer. Customers who had an ISBN would always read out the dashes over the phone and it was easier not to correct them.
The spacing of the numbers does have a logic. Ignoring 978 (which is a whole other thing for another day) 0 or 1 means English (2 is French, 3 is German, etc), followed by the publisher’s prefix. 14 was Penguin paperbacks, 552 was Cambridge University Press. (1/5)
