When looking at "Yixing Teapots" the first distinction is "is it handmade or cast?"
Unlike many clay vessels, the purple sand clays used for teapots cannot be worked on a pottery wheel. The clay is too stiff and brittle. The teapots are "slab built" not spun. So if a teapot was made using a mould or spun on a wheel it's probably NOT purple sand. It still may be a very good teapot, though I'd avoid imitations.
If a pot is very old or made by a well know artist it could be very expensive.
